Shading and texture built from dots

Dotwork builds shading from individual dots, with density controlling the depth of a black gradient. Even placement and enough space between dots keep the texture visible. The design also needs enough size for its detail as it settles.

I use it for a softer-looking gradient without greywash, texture without solid fill, or a pattern lighter than solid blackwork. It can sit within a geometric or ornamental structure.

Where dotwork works best
