Tattoo age in Ireland and my 18+ rule

Table of Contents

How old do you have to be to get a tattoo in Ireland? At my Birr studio, you must be 18. A 2019 Ministerial answer said there was no specific legislation regulating tattooing businesses in Ireland, but consent law can still apply, including in cases involving minors. Northern Ireland separately sets 18 in law.

My rule is simple: 18 and over

I work with clients aged 18 and over. It doesn't matter if it's small, hidden under clothing, or a birthday present. Same rule for everyone.

I also use the same ID check for everyone. I don't decide by appearance. Looking older, coming with a parent or showing me a social media profile is not enough.

This is my studio policy. It gives every client a clear answer before they travel to Birr, pay a deposit or spend time preparing a design. You can read my first tattoo guide while you plan, but the tattoo appointment must wait until you're 18.

What the official sources say about the Republic of Ireland

I checked the official sources below again on 30 July 2026. This is general information, not legal advice for a personal case.

In a 2019 Oireachtas answer about tattooing and body piercing, the Minister for Health said there was no specific legislation regulating tattooing and body-piercing businesses in Ireland. The same answer said tattooing without proper informed consent may be a criminal offence and that cases involving minors can raise further legal questions.

That doesn't require a studio to tattoo anyone under 18. My studio policy is 18+.

You may also find references to the Regulation of Intimate Piercing and Tattooing Bill 2018. It proposed an under-18 rule and a new system of regulation. The official Oireachtas record shows that the Bill lapsed when the Dáil was dissolved. It did not become law.

The official records and my studio policy are different things. They show that consent is considered under wider Irish law and that the proposed under-18 rule did not become law. My studio still works with adults only. If you need advice about your own situation, please ask an Irish solicitor or the right public authority.

Can a parent give permission at 16 or 17?

Not at my studio. Your parent's signature doesn't remove my 18+ rule. I don't make an exception for initials, memorial tattoos, matching family designs, cultural symbols or very small tattoos.

Your reason and the meaning of the tattoo do not change the rule. Keeping it clear also avoids a wasted journey or a deposit paid for an appointment that cannot go ahead.

You can still use the waiting time well. Save a few references and write down what you like in each one. Think about the body area, the size in centimetres and whether you may want to add more work around it later. My tattoo portfolio shows finished tattoos, and the tattoo ideas library can help you find a direction.

What ID should you bring?

Please bring a valid original passport, driving licence or Garda Age Card. The document must show your photo and date of birth clearly.

If I can't confirm your age from the original document, I won't start the tattoo that day. Bring it even if you already told me your age in a message.

Northern Ireland has a different law

The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have different rules. The Tattooing of Minors (Northern Ireland) Order 1979 sets a minimum age of 18 for permanent tattooing in Northern Ireland. The Order includes a medical exception.

Parental consent cannot remove that Northern Ireland age limit. This is one reason online answers for “tattoo age Ireland” often look different. They may be talking about two different parts of the island.

My studio is in Birr, County Offaly, in the Republic of Ireland. My own rule is also 18 and over.

How to plan before you turn 18

Choose the main subject and body area. Measure the rough size in centimetres. Save two or three useful references instead of a large folder of mixed images. Tell me what you like about the line work, colour, mood or composition. References help me understand the idea, but I don't copy another artist's finished tattoo.

You can also plan the budget. My tattoo pricing guide explains what changes a quote and what details I need. The studio hygiene guide explains what I check before and during tattoo work. You can read about my experience and training on the about page.

Do not book around a tight birthday deadline if you have not settled the design. It's better to wait for the right size and placement than to choose quickly because one date is available.

Booking after you turn 18

Once you're 18, send your idea through the booking form. Include the subject, placement, approximate size and a few references. If the tattoo contains names, dates or fixed wording, type them exactly as you want them written.

I'll check whether the idea suits the requested size and body area. If I need more information, I'll ask before confirming the next step. Remember to bring your original photo ID to the appointment.

Tattoo age questions answered

Short answers about appointment dates, original ID and why the studio in Birr follows the Republic of Ireland.

Can my appointment be on my eighteenth birthday?

Yes. The appointment can be on that day if your valid original photo ID confirms your date of birth.

Can I send a photo of my ID before the appointment?

You can send booking details, but a photo doesn't replace the check. Bring the original document to the appointment.

Can I use an expired passport or driving licence?

The document must still be valid on the appointment date.

What if the booking name doesn't match my ID?

The booking must be for the person getting the tattoo. Tell me before the appointment if the name needs to be corrected.

Does Northern Ireland law apply to the studio in Birr?

Birr is in the Republic of Ireland. My studio has its own 18+ rule, which gives the same minimum age for an appointment.

Are you 18 and ready to book?

Send me the subject, placement, approximate size and a few useful references.
