Tattoo Placement Ideas by Body Part
Explore tattoo placement ideas by body part using real tattoos from my Birr portfolio. Forearms, ribs, hands, backs and legs each need a different size, direction and level of detail.
Forearm Tattoo
I use the forearm shape to set the direction and size. Inner, outer and wraparound designs need different layouts.
Hand Tattoo
For a hand tattoo, I keep the main shape bold and clear because the area is visible and gets a lot of wear.
Spine Tattoo
I line up a spine tattoo with the body first, then check the spacing while the client stands and moves.
Sleeve Tattoo
I plan a sleeve as one full arm project, with room for each part and a clear flow between them.
Back Tattoo
The back gives me a large canvas. I check symmetry, movement and whether the design may grow later.
Finger Tattoo
Finger tattoos need very simple shapes and clear spacing. I explain their limits before I suggest the final size.

Neck tattoos are hard to hide and the skin can feel sensitive, so I keep the plan clear and considered.

For a leg tattoo, I use the calf or lower leg shape to guide the scale, angle and flow.
Ankle Tattoo
The ankle is small and curved. I keep the design clear and plan healing around shoes and socks.
Shoulder Tattoo
I use the curve of the shoulder to shape the design and leave room if it may join a sleeve later.
Rib Tattoo
Rib tattoos follow a strong body curve. I plan the stencil carefully and allow for breathing during the session.
Hip Tattoo
For a hip tattoo, I check the body curve and clothing line, then place the design where it can flow naturally.
Upper Arm Tattoo
The upper arm has room for one piece or a future sleeve. I plan the design around the arm instead of treating it like a flat page.
