Before I tattoo an Ogham design, I need the exact final version you have already checked yourself. I don't use a converter as proof, and I don't confirm the word, symbols, stroke direction, spelling, reading direction or meaning. Ogham was made for early Irish sounds, so a modern English word may not match it letter for letter. Have the language and final Ogham form checked independently first. Then send the finished design for placement and tattooing.
What Ogham is
The National Museum of Ireland's Ogham resource calls Ogham the earliest form of writing found in Ireland. Its activity sheet says that many surviving stones date from the fourth to sixth centuries. It also explains that the characters stand for sounds in early Irish and that many stones carry a person's name and family link.
That history is one reason names and family words suit an Ogham tattoo. It doesn't mean every modern name can be copied straight into the script. The Museum's chart doesn't contain every letter in the English alphabet. Converters may drop a letter, swap it or make up a mark without telling you. The result can look convincing and still be wrong.
Translation and transliteration are different. Translation chooses the word in another language. Transliteration writes an agreed word in another writing system. If you want an Irish word, ask a suitable language specialist to check the Irish first, then have the complete Ogham form checked as well. You need to have the final inscription checked before you send it to me. My part starts with placement and tattooing; the wording, marks, direction and meaning stay with the version you supply.

Ogham tattoo ideas that fit the shape
One name is a clear place to start. First names, surnames and family names can follow one stem line. This also fits the history of personal names on Ogham stones. Memorial names can work in the same way. I normally keep a date in ordinary numbers beside it so the date stays clear.
Short Irish words can make quiet and personal tattoos. I don't give clients a ready-made list of words with supposed meanings. The exact spelling and meaning need a reliable source. Place-names can also be personal, especially a townland, family home or county connection. Old, modern, Irish and English forms of the same place may differ, so the chosen form needs checking before the design starts.
For a larger piece, Ogham can sit beside simple botanical lines, a stone-like edge or one other Irish element. Any surrounding composition must leave the supplied inscription unchanged. - One name: simple, personal and easy to place on one stem. Check every letter, the reading direction and the full length.
- Short Irish word: small on the skin, but still personal. Check the Irish word first, then check its proposed Ogham form.
- Place-name: links the tattoo to family or home. Choose the modern, historic, Irish or English form before I draw it.
- Memorial name: suits a clean vertical line. Keep the date and any other symbols separate from the character groups.
- Ogham with plants: adds shape to a longer piece. Make sure leaves and stems do not break or hide the groups of marks.
Irish word tattoos and Ogham lettering
An Irish word tattoo needs two decisions before the final design is ready. First, confirm the Irish spelling and meaning with a reliable language source. A fada is part of the spelling, so keep it in the plain-text version you send. Then decide whether you want ordinary Roman letters or an Ogham inscription.
Roman lettering is the clearer choice when you want people to read the word straight away. Ogham gives the word a historic linear structure, but it is not a decorative font that can be swapped in without checking each character. If you choose Ogham, send the final normal spelling and final Ogham form together. I work from the final Ogham version you supply.

I work only from a final Ogham design you have checked before booking. My part begins with placement and the stencil; the word, marks, direction and meaning stay with the version you supply. An online converter screenshot is not enough.

- Have the normal spelling and complete Ogham form checked independently.
- Include the final stroke direction, reading direction and orientation in that check.
- Send the exact finished design at the intended scale.
- At the appointment, I place the supplied stencil on the agreed area.
- Before tattooing starts, you confirm that it is the exact version you supplied.
At the stencil check, I confirm placement and scale with you. I don't re-translate or rebuild the inscription. If any part is uncertain, resolve it before booking; the content and form remain your responsibility.
Reading direction, spacing and placement
Ogham marks sit on, across or beside a central stem. On a stone, the edge could act as that stem. The Heritage Ireland page for Darrynane Beg Ogham Stone says inscriptions were usually vertical and are read from bottom to top. This is useful historic context, not a studio verification service. The final design you supply must already show the reading direction you have checked.
Vertical Ogham tattoos are often placed on the forearm, calf, upper arm, ribs or spine. The body changes the line: forearms turn, calves curve and the spine doesn't give the viewer the edge of a stone as a guide. At the appointment, you can view the supplied stencil while standing naturally and moving. This checks placement only, not whether the Ogham is correct or clear.
Ogham uses groups of strokes around the stem, so bring the final design at its intended size. If you're unsure whether its marks will remain distinct, resolve that before booking.
What should you send for an Ogham consultation?
Send the exact final Ogham design, its independently checked plain-text wording, the agreed reading direction, a clear photo of the body area and the intended size in centimetres. The language, symbols and meaning remain your responsibility; I plan placement for the final version you send.

Common questions
Can an English name be written in Ogham?
Sometimes, but it may not be a direct letter-for-letter match. The historic character set doesn't contain every modern English letter. Have the exact name, complete Ogham form, length, spacing and direction checked independently. Send only the final version after those details have been checked independently.
Should an Ogham tattoo read from bottom to top?
Bottom to top is the direction described for many stone inscriptions. Your final design must already show the first mark, last mark, reading direction and intended orientation. Have all of that checked independently; I don't choose or verify it for you.
How small can Ogham writing be?
I don't set or confirm an Ogham-specific minimum size. Bring the final design at the intended scale after independently checking the marks and spacing. I can tattoo the version you supply, but I don't certify its clarity, meaning or how it may read after healing.
What happens to a fada in an Irish word?
Have the Irish spelling, every fada and the complete Ogham form checked before booking. Send the exact final version you want tattooed. I don't add, remove, change or verify any part of it.
